"Director of Global Equity Research Publications"

Fidelity Management and Research Company (FMRCo)

Served as global liaison between Fidelity mutual fund portfolio managers (PMs), analysts and senior management to improve proprietary equity research. Designed variety of internal publication templates. Wrote training materials, program and system documentation, end-user manuals, course syllabi. Built document-creation and delivery vehicles with information technology group.

To see samples of my work at Fidelity, please call or e-mail me .

1) Research Reports:

First initiative was to improve the quality of Fidelity's proprietary internal research. Thus, I designed new Web-based internal publishing platform (for Boston, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong offices) to enhance quality and speed delivery of investment research, called "Research Reports." Research Reports was an umbrella that encompassed different types of stock research — company, sector, industry, economic, IPO and special situation reports. My new application drove significant companywide change-management initiative that transformed the way analysts wrote research and portfolio managers received it.

  • New Research Report Project: Description of what I proposed to do to re-vamp company's research publications. (MS Word)

  • Key Research Products: List of new research products and their uses. (MS Word)

  • T-Shirt: Design for T-shirt given to FMRCo employees as promotion for Research Reports rollout. (MS Paint)

1a) Various Research Report Templates (a few of  many, made to correspond to type of research):

  • Daily Notes: Sample of one-page company note on my automated publishing system. Analysts' models were automatically printed on the reverse side. There were two batch prints of "Daily Notes", one in the early a.m. and one just before market close. On a busy day, there could be as many as 1000 company notes. (MS Word and proprietary Fidelity software)

  • "Topicks:" Template I designed specifically for Fidelity Associates so they would have their own publishing platform, apart from the senior analysts. First sector- then company-oriented. (MS Word)

  • "Sector Reports:" Created for each sector covered by Fidelity; used by senior sector leaders for monthly updates. (MS Word)

1b) Technical Writing Accompanied Project:

  •  Research Reports Cheat Sheet: Laminated card for research reports system for users to keep at their desks. (MS Word)

  •  Research Reports Brochure: Rollout brochure for users of Research Reports. (MS Word)

  •  Research Reports - Training: Text for work-station trainers. (MS Word)

2) London Analysts/ "What Matters" Book:

Worked closely with analysts and research director in Fidelity's London office. We published a an annual report called "What Matters", which was composed of the London analysts' best stock picks.

  • "What Matters" Introduction: Wrote the introduction to the book. (MS Word)

  •  Teaching Template: Developed a teaching template for analysts' submissions to the What Matters book. The template was to aid the analysts in writing write more effective investment research. (MS Word)

3) Investment Professional Profiling System (IPPS):

Conceived landmark proprietary Web-based, “Investment Professional Profiling System” (IPPS) tool — This application helped target PMs accurately, individually and comprehensively with Wall Street research. Site went from Fidelity to the Street (top-10 brokers).

IPPS contained separate pages for each Fidelity portfolio manager and analyst. These profiles displayed an investment professional's background, investment style, areas of interest — such as sectors, industries, market capitalization, countries — top-ten and top-50 holdings according to Fidelity’s latest-three-month Mutual Fund Guide, additional ticker symbols (discretionary), preferred methods of research delivery and a personal message from the IP (discretionary).

  • IPPS — Presentation: Distilled from a longer formal business plan. I presented this verbally to senior management in order to procure funding for project. (MS PowerPoint)

  • Content Model: Initial content requirements for IT department. (MS Word)

  • Internet Still Shots: Screen Shots of beta version.

  • Marketing Poster: Posted around department as part of IPPS rollout.

4) New Associate Training Program:

Each fall, FMRCo held an intensive two-week boot camp for new associates.  I participated by developing core-training program for associates on writing fundamental research, including format, style and logistics — I led workshops and mentored individuals.

  • Writing Workshop: Seminar I led for incoming FMRCo associates.  Sample contains front page and table of contents only. (MS Word)

  • Research Writing Handbook: Each year I revised the original style guide I created for analysts and associates. This sample is from 2000-2001 (front page and table of contents). (MS Word)

  • Training Document: MS Word functionality. (MS Word)

5) Editor's circle:

Helped form a group called the "Fidelity Editor's Circle" for the purpose of sharing resources, ideas and common concerns with other editorial professionals and content managers, who represented a cross section of business units at Fidelity.

  • "Editor's Circle Offers Resources:" Article reproduced from Fidelity employee newsletter, The Fidelity Exchange, Nov 2000. Page 10.
